Charlie Weis, you ARE fat and ugly, but that’s not the problem

Charlie Weis will be featured on ESPN’s “Sunday Conversation” this upcoming Sunday during SportsCenter. During the previews shown on ESPN, Weis can be heard telling the interviewer that he claims that he doesn’t care when people call him over-weight or even ugly (well Charlie you aren’t good looking, and let’s face it, it’s no secret that you are rather large), but he really struggles with the personal attacks on his character from fans and people that don’t even know him.

Well Charlie, you can hardly blame fans of Notre Dame for harboring some feelings of ill-will towards you. After signing Weis to a 6 year approximately $12 million dollar contract, Fighting Irish fans expected greatness from you. A product of the New England Patriots’ coaching pedigree, Charlie was supposed to be a savior for a program that went 6-5 in Tyrone Willingham’s final year.

After Weis’ first two seasons, he had amassed a 19-6 overall record and brought the Irish to back to back bowl appearances, however, Notre Dame would lose both of those games. Following that 2006 Sugar Bowl loss, Weis has only managed to go 10-15 overall.  Notre Dame is one of the richest schools in the NCAA in terms of tradition. Every year, more and more top talents sign on to wear that gold helmet. Notre Dame is one of those schools that no matter how poorly they do the previous season, you can bet they will have a solid recruiting class because of what the school stands for, similar to UCLA or Duke in basketball. In Weis’ 2006 and 2007 recruiting classes, he has had nine All-Americans according to USA Today. With so much top talent flowing through South Bend, how can Weis be anything but apologetic regarding his team’s results the last couple years.

Notre Dame fans can obviously be spoiled and expectant of a little too much given their rich tradition, but I think they deserve better than Weis’ 29-21 overall record (1-2 in bowl games). Weis continues to carry himself as though he is content with what he has done in his time with Notre Dame, and that is what irks people.

By now you may have heard about the story of the child whose last wish was to call a play for Charlie Weis’ Irish football team. Weis promised he would allow that to happen on the first offensive play, and he came through on that promise. Notre Dame found themselves pinned on their own one yard line for their first offensive possession, but Weis stuck to his word and called a play action pass which resulted in 13 yards and a first down. Now it’s stories like this that make it difficult to hate the guy. It makes me agree that his character is probably the last thing that should be attacked, but at the same time I wonder if maybe that child should have taken over the play calling duties for the Irish.

Weis’ recruiting class again is elite coming into the next season, and his QB position should be a little less shaky, so Weis needs to produce in his fifth season with the Irish if he wants to avoid more attacks on his personal appearance and more importantly, avoid losing his job. Maybe Weis should focus less on what people think of his appearance and more about how he is again going to unravel the mess in South Bend, only this time he’ll be undoing his own handy work.

So when Notre Dame wins 7 games this year will you all eat your words?

    Rottie,
I couldn't agree more. If you want to continue on with character and class, look at Hannah and Friends. I couldn't be more proud to have such a great coach!

However, I couldn't be more embarrassed that someone calls themselves a fan of Notre Dame writes an article with such a title. (I can't even repeat it.) The sad thing is that same line is typically used as yet another genius retort from the Ohio State fans I am constantly barraged with. Please don't EVER call yourself a Notre Dame fan and write something like that again.

You are so very wrong. Weis is one of the best things to ever happen to Notre Dame. HIS recruiting classes the last few years are due to his hard work and his understand the history, tradition and importance of Notre Dame. You seem to be ignorant of the fact that Ty Willingham who didn't recruit left a totally empty cupboard for Weis. It is why so many coaches didn't want the job. Any fool could see the 2007 3 and 9 year coming once Brady Quinn graduated. Just wait. The next few years will be amazing and you can eat all your words about Charlie Weis. And he is a fine man of character too.

"I never said anything about Weis’ appearance rather than pointing out that he is infact not very good looking, and rather large. I think I sugarcoated that pretty well."

that's like saying, 'i didn't say anything inappropriate other than a personal remark about the obvious fact that he's a fat ogre.' oh wait, that is what you said.

" I was more so referring to other people’s comments regarding his appearance that he spoke about."

that's like saying, "i'm not really coming up with the headline of my article, your fat and ugly CW, rather i'm repeating what he said everyone else in the world thinks of him. so what's your point, everyone else is shallow and stupid so it's ok for you to be? what do the guy's weight and looks have to do with his job? what does the fact that he's sensitive about it have to do with job? you're just looking for an attention grabbing headline. you have nothing of substance to bring to the table--i.e., the fat man makes a lot of money and this is a key year for him to keep his job (wow, i hadn't read or seen that before a 1000 times). did you bother to research the fact that he was so self conscious about his weight, he had gastric bypass surgery that went wrong and now he's permanently fat with a limp for the rest of his life because of it. he's literally disabled and his daughter's disabled too. and then this fat and ugly guy has the nerve to be upset about personal attacks. jeez that's so unlike the rest of right? i wish you had your pic up so we could all tell you what you look like genius. and finally, nice job of working in that terminally ill child into your sleazy article with a crappy joke about how he'd do better play calling. you forgot to add that a 'dead' child would do better than weis. that's your idea of a joke? i know a joke when i read one and i read one today

    fatuglydomer-

You're "2)" is legit, an oversight on my part.

I never said anything about Weis' appearance rather than pointing out that he is infact not very good looking, and rather large. I think I sugarcoated that pretty well. I was more so referring to other people's comments regarding his appearance that he spoke about.

However, I do find it interesting that you took the time to write a rather long response to an article only to follow it by saying it's not worth your time.

Anyway, thanks for the correction, and thanks for the response...

    A couple things...
    1) The last 2 recruiting classes are going to be sophmores and juinors this year, and that doesn't count the ones that were redshirted, so most of these peeps have 2+ years of football to play.
    2) Notre Dame went to a bowl game last season, the Hawaii Bowl, and won. Even though most predicted that they would be blown out. Please get your facts straight.
    3) You should watch what you say about others, it might bite you in the a$$ someday. Your comments about Charlie's appearance are childish and immature.
    4) Ahhh, never mind, its not worth my time.
