Jay Cutler to Chicago Bears, a Trade That Really Doesn't Help Anyone

Well Chicago, you got your QB that you were looking for. The Chicago Bears gave up their first round picks in both 2009 and 2010 and their 3rd round pick in 2009. They did however, receive the Broncos 5th round pick this season. I think this trade works for both teams, but doesn’t ultimately improve either team drastically.

The Denver Broncos are now faced with the reality of picking a starter between Kyle Orton and Chris Simms, awesome if you’re a Broncos fan. I think Broncos fans everywhere should be thankful they even have an option between Simms and Orton. I would probably take Orton to be the opening day starter, considering he’s done a decent job with a subpar Bears team.

On the other hand, Jay Cutler is walking into a situation in Chicago were he will be the starter on opening day. This will help the dynamics of the team as they enter mini-camp and other offseason activities. Chicago’s wide receivers are a big question mark. Cutler is a decent quarterback, but has yet to prove anything more than that.

This trade improves Chicago, by a slight margin. Instead of having nobody throw to nobody, they have somebody throwing to nobody. That still doesn’t equal success. I think getting rid of their draft picks will ultimately hurt them in the long run, but you can’t blame a team for trying.

As for Denver, in terms of winning now, this trade couldn’t have been worse for them. Cutler was just beginning to emerge as a legitimate NFL quarterback. The team wiped the slate clean in terms of coaching and some personnel as they looked to truly improve this team. Now they are stuck with a very average Quarterback in Kyle Orton, and no pattern to their madness.  They have 3 high draft picks over the next 2 years which they can use to fill their sketchy defense.  They might need to use a draft pick on a QB, unless Denver truly believes Orton can get it done.

Is this the beginning of a new Oakland Raider-like organization? Can the AFC West handle two teams without a plan? The rest of the AFC West sure hopes so.
