John Calipari and the Memphis Tigers, you can't fool me.

Bob on 03 20, 2009

Memphis Men’s basketball coach John Calipari is a scrub. Mark my words; the Tigers will NOT win a championship with Calipari at the helm.

It irritates me that this guy collects so much praise. He was the Naismith College Coach of the Year last season and Sports Illustrated named this obnoxious coach the College Basketball Coach of the Year this season. WHY? I understand last year’s Memphis squad set an NCAA D1 record for most W’s in a season (38), but this impressive number of victories is not a result of Calipari’s coaching.

As you know, the Tigers play in the feeble Conference USA, and Memphis brings in some of the best recruits year in and year out. They should be(and are) blowing out teams like Rice, Southern Methodist, Southern Miss, Tulane, East Carolina etc…

Calipari’s name gets thrown in the mix with current greats like Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Bill Self. What an insult to these guys. This tool of a head coach from Memphis does not have the qualities of a great coach. His coaching appears lackadaisical and sloppy. It seems like he never has his team ready to play. Also, is it just me or does Calipari have an attitude that annoys the hell out of you? Kind of cocky and conceited? He reminds me of the rich prick flashing his stuff and talking trash, the guy you’d like to give a good shot in the chops.

There’s a reason the Tigers were on the brink of being upset yesterday against the Cal State Northridge Matadors. Calipari didn’t have his team prepared. My guess is he completely overlooked CSN and had his mind on Cal/Maryland.

John Calipari is building a reputation for bringing in the best recruits. Derrick Rose last season, Tyreke Evans this year, DeMarcus Cousins and Xavier Henry (number 2 & 3 recruits overall according to Rivals.com) next season. How much money did it cost you to get these guys, John? Couple hundred Gs? Maybe a Hummer? This sleezball of a coach might be up to some shady business.

Watching the Tigers struggle against Cal State Northridge yesterday pushed me over the limit. Simply put, Calipari is not a good coach. How do you give a coach an award for Coach of the Year when he single handedly lost his team the National Title last year? Or did we all forget about that? I certainly didn’t, his awful coaching cost me a G in my March Madness Tournament. Up 3 with just seconds left, you HAVE to foul, even I know that! Are you kidding me? This guy is considered a great coach?

[Update: Can anyone actually tell me why John Calipari is a good coach?]

I appreciate you addressing me personally. Frankly, the "what if" card just doesn't work. Don't single Memphis out concerning their road to the Elite 8, Final 4, or championship game and ignore other teams' paths. Should you also discount Kansas' victory in the National Championship game because of their road (Portland St, UNLV, Villanova, and Davidson)? (Let's not talk about KU playing with ineligible players.) What about Florida in '07 (Jackson St, & Purdue) or '06 (South Alabama, Milwaukee, & Georgetown)? The list could go on and on. Nobody wins the NC by playing all powerhouses.

What's it going to take...Memphis coming from the play-in game to win the championship? Whipping Michigan State, Texas, and UCLA last year was impressive...even to the Tiger faithful.

Why aren't you stomping on Pitino for "barely beating" Siena? Or talking stupid about Izzo's win (barely) over USC? Why not crack on K for barely beating Texas? Why aren't you bashing Dino for the wet fart they cut against Cleveland State? Self only beat North Dakota State by 10, but why is there no outcry on your part? (a side note...KU is dirty. Don't tell me they had no idea about Arthur's transcript "issues." If he was too stupid to pass high school, how'd he remain eligible at KU?) Jamie Dixon's team has looked pitiful, but where's your attack on him? You are a hypocrite and you're using your disdain for Calipari to feed the hypocrisy.

Using your line of thinking, then 4 consecutive Sweet 16 appearances is no big deal...except the numbers don't bear that out. 14 teams have been to 4 consecutive Sweet 16's. 2 of those teams were Tigers from Memphis.

By the way, the Elite 8 appearances (after dominating CUSA) were obviously warranted. Simple logic demands that 1 seeds are among the top 4 teams in the country...likewise, 2 seeds are between 5 and 8. It seems to me that the selection committee has done a pretty good job in recent years with top seeds advancing (for the most part). If you don't like Memphis being "rewarded" for dominating CUSA, fine...but their level of Tourny success has proven the committee right. Top seeds deserve the easier road. That's the way the Tourny works. It's always been that way.

Ask Tom Izzo if Memphis was a tough draw last year. Ask Rick Barnes about Memphis. Ask Gary Williams if he'd prefer not to have played the Tigers Saturday. See if Mark Few (also in the Sweet 16) was impressed with us on Feb 7.

Man your arguments are pretty feeble. The only answer to the numerous facts thrown at you is to recite easy paths to the NCAA and then when Memphis annihilated Michigan State and Texas in their home state. Also UCLA in th final four. Ohhhh... forgot to mention that one, it was because they had talent. What? You can't have your cake and eat it to. How did you get this gig anyway. It sure wasn't your basketball knowledge.

    Dear Bob

The only thing I get out of your drivel is you should spend less time throwing your money away on basketball and start watching it instead. I'm not really into calling anyone a "tool" but I would guess you really come off as the tool that you try to portray in John Calipari. I might add, your writing skills are inferior.
  • jammaster
    Bob,

How about Kansas barely beating # 10 seed Davidson last season to reach the Final 4. Does the fact they struggled against a mid-major school, and were a missed 3 by Curry away from not going, diminish their championship? If Louisville from the badass Big East goes to the Elite 8, does it matter that they will defeat the # 12 seed Arizona to get there? Also, in 2006, it wasn't our fault that Kansas and Pitt lost in the early rounds and weren't available to play in the Sweet 16. We simply destroyed the teams that were responsible for knocking Pitt and Kansas out.

Are you basing your "Cal never has his team ready to play" comment strictly on the CSUN game? Yes, we came out flat, and if it wasn't for the shooting of Roburt Sallie, we might have lost. But the mark of a good team (and coach) is that guys can come off the bench and are ready to make this kind of impact on a game. Several of the top seeds struggled this weekend, but the name of the game is advancing. It really doesn't matter that we "only" beat CSUN by 11 points while UConn beat Chattanooga by 56. If we meet them in the Elite 8, the score is still going to be 0-0 at tipoff, and we'll see who the best team is.

We can play " what if? " games all day long, and it really doesn't help anything. What if we played in the ACC or Big East? I don't know. All I can go by is our record against teams from those conferences, and for the last several years, we've held our own pretty well.

A team does not go 137-13 over the last 4 years if the coach is horrible. Sorry, it just doesn't happen. No, CUSA is not a premier league, and the bottom teams are bad. However, CUSA is not Memphis and the 11 SMU's or Rice's. The conference is better than it gets credit for. The top 4 teams all have decent RPI numbers, yet when we play UAB (RPI in the 38-42 range when we played) on the road, we are expected to win. Yet # 1 Pitt can get absolutely killed by a mediocre Providence team (RPI in the 70's), and it's excused because "all Big East road games are tough".

Also, Calipari not only recruits good players, but he develops them as well. Yes, guys like Derrick Rose and Shawne Williams would have gone to the NBA no matter what, but what about Chris Douglas-Roberts, Antonio Burks, Joey Dorsey and Rodney Carney, to name a few? These are guys that were not highly recruited coming out of high school, yet went on to professional careers. Does Cal not get any credit for this?

I really am not sure what your point in writing this was, except to maybe generate hits on your website. If so, congratulations, I'm sure you did.

    A couple of quick points:

Memphis can't just up and change conferences. They deal with the hand they are dealt. And they win. EVERY GAME! Conference USA is the 10th rated conference, not the 31st. There have been over 30 "Big 6" teams lose to Conference USA teams since the last time Memphis lost to one.

2006-It's not Memphis's fault that the blue-bloods lost games in the tournaments to mid majors, forcing Memphis to play them. Memphis lost in the Elite Eight to big bad UCLA by 5. So you are clearly saying that UCLA was really not very goo either.

2007- That measly Texas AM team that the Tigers Barely beat was a good enough team to get it's coach a new job. At KENTUCKY. The Bluest of all the bloods. So I would have to say that winning that game, with Freethrows I might add, was at least of some merit.

2008- If Calipari can't coach, then neither can Izzo, Burns, Howland, or Self. Yes, I said Self. CDR makes one more free throw (a non-coached skill) and it's over. Self was lucky. He wins in overtime because our big man had fouled out, obviously not planning on having to play 5 more minutes.

2009- Expected to be a "down" year, with the crux of its scoring gone, Calipari somehow has pulled off the longest winning streak in school history (27 to date). Guess what, that wasn't all CUSA teams in there either. Did you miss that game where Memphis completely destroyed Gonzaga (4 seed)? And I guess you were not around when they beat Tennessee either. So that must mean that Mark Few and Bruce Pearl can't coach either (I don't completely disagree about the latter).

Maryland (who was dismantled by Memphis Saturday) was lower in the RPI than UAB and Tulsa. Maryland beat UNC and Wake Forest. So that is evidence that you can count out UNC and Wake from going undefeated in CUSA. Also, Providence (who beat #1 Pitt) falls in that same category, so let's go ahead and rest assure that there is evidence to support that PITT (who beat #1 UCONN twice) would not have gone undefeated either.

I could go ON and ON and ON.... but I will finish with this. It's not Calipari's fault that B. Self didn't get any 5 stars this year. Oh wait, yes it is. He won the recruiting battle. The way a great coach does. Only this coach does it every year.

does the route to the title game diminish getting there? if so, check KU's route last year: portland st (16), unlv (8), villanova (12), davidson (10)...

last time i checked, you play whoever is in front of you

ps: memphis' free throw shooting has improved considerably this year

ARE YOU ARE COMPLETELY RIGHT, ONLY SCHOOLS FROM THE BIG SIX SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY COLLEGE BASKETBALL. IT IS A SLAP IN THE FACE THAT CAL EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING TAKE THIS, THIS, OMG I CANT EVEN SAY IT I THINK... MID MAJOR TO PLAY ON THE SAME COURT AS DUKE, UNC, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, UCONN, PITT, LOUISVILLE... HAVE I GOTTEN TO YOUR TEAM YET???? IF I HAVENT DONT WORRY THE TIGERS WILL GET THERE SOON ENOUGH AND YOU CAN LOOSE ANOTHER "G" BECAUSE YOU BET AGAINST THEM.

ASIDE FROM YOUR OBVIOUS MOTIVATION BEING YOUR FISCAL LOSSES, YOU GO ON TO INSULT JUST ABOUT EVERY PLAYER THAT HAS COME THROUGH THE MEMPHIS PROGRAM BY ASSERTING THAT THEY MUST HAVE ONLY COME BECAUSE THEY WERE PAID TO COME. WOW, IS THAT SOUR MILK I SMELL? A NC STATE FAN MAD BECAUSE THEY LOST COUSINS? A KANSAS FAN HENRY PICKED MEMPHIS? A ILLINOIS FAN FLUSTERED BECAUSE ROSE BLOOMED IN MEMPHIS? A NOVA FAN SAD BECAUSE EVENS FELT HE WOULD BE ABLE TO BETTER DEVELOP UNDER CAL? OR A DUKE FAN MAD BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE JOHN WALL IS GOING TO SUIT UP IN MEMPHIS NEXT YEAR? OHHH WAIT IS THAT A MICH ST FAN STILL MAD THAT THE WINNINGEST PLAYER IN NCAA HISTORY ANTONIO ANDERSON PICKED MEMPHIS???

REGARDLESS YOU HAVE SHOWED YOU LEVEL OF INTELLIGENCE AND CLASS, OR LACK OF BOTH. I AM NOT A LAWYER, BUT I HOPE SOMEONE WHO READS YOU CHILDLIKE RANT IS AND CAN INFORM CAL AND HIS FORMER PLAYERS, IM SURE THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN YOUR DEFAMATION OF THEIR CHARACTER, AND CLAIMS OF IMPROPER ACTS.

HAVE A FANTASTIC DAY IN WHATEVER WORLD YOU DECIDE TO LIVE IN, AND DONT WORRY WHEN YOU DECIDE TO COME BACK TO REALITY THE TIGERS, AND CAL WILL BE WAITING TO LET YOU KNOW THEY ARE STILL AROUND MAKE BLUE BLOODS AROUND THE COLLEGE BASKETBALL WORLD CRINGE AT THE POSSIBILITY OF SEEING THEM IN THEIR BRACKET EACH MARCH.
  • Bob
@TigerJaaaa "How the hell did a “bad coach” get to 2 Elite 8’s, a National Championship game, and another Sweet 16 (and still counting) in consecutive years?"

    To be more meticulous:

Should we really be that impressed that Memphis has made 4 consecutive sweet 16s, 2 elite 8s and a Championship game? As a result of Memphis' dominance in the weak C-USA, they have been rewarded with two #1 seeds and two #2 seedings in the last 4 tournaments.

The road to the Sweet 16 is a whole lot easier having a #1 or #2 seed...

2006 - Memphis had a #1 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 by knocking off Oral Roberts & Bucknell. The Tigers beat #13 Bradley to advance to the Elite 8.

2007 - Memphis had a #2 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 by achieving victories over North Texas and Nevada. They barely beat Texas A&M;(65-64) to advance to the Elite 8.

2008 - Memphis had a #1 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 by beating Texas-Arlington and Mississippi St.(barely). I will admit this Memphis team was impressive, which is why I had them picked to win it all. An extremely talented team led by #1 pick overall in this year's NBA Draft, Derrick Rose, and Chris Douglas-Roberts(the top scorer in the tourny).

2009 - Memphis has a #2 seed and advanced to the Sweet 16 by barely beating Cal St. Northridge and knocking off Maryland.

To wrap it up - Memphis has had a favorable schedule, both regular season and post. Is it truly that difficult to advance to the Elite 8 by beating #16 Oral Roberts, #9 Bucknell and #13 Bradley? I would love to see if Memphis could continue to gain the top seeds in the tournament if they played in a more competitive conference. What if Memphis was in the Big East? Would they still be getting a top seed in the NCAA tournament?

Memphis' National Championship appearance last year was due to the stellar play from freshman phenom Derrick Rose along with an extremely talented and deep roster. I feel the reason they lost(and would love to hear otherwise) was due to Calipari's coaching. I agree Calipari has his team playing great defense, but he has continued to fail to touch base on FT shooting, which is crucial in diminishing a team's chances to make a comeback in a tight game. Poor free throw shooting, along with Calipari's decision not to foul in the remaining seconds cost Memphis the title. I won't be surprised if poor shooting from the stripe is the demise of Memphis this year. That or another poor decision by their head coach.
  • tommytommy

I always laughed at Sports writers who allow their personal bias overcome their professional objectivity. You may wish John Calipari badly; however, his record speaks for itself, and you make yourself look petty and foolish by making such obviously ignorant statements.

Wow! This might be the dumbest thing i've ever read. Next time Bob , don't bet all your crack $$$$ on a basketball game
  • NorthFloridaTiger
Terrible coach! Four straight years in the Sweet 16. Only 14 programs in college basketball have managed that. The Tigers must have incredible athletes to accomplish this with an incompetent at the helm!
  • dm
Hey 'Truth', why don't you have your buddy Tim Flowers report Cal to the NCAA for recruiting violations if he paid Rose? All you people hating on Calipari and Memphis love to throw out these comments, but somehow Calipari and Memphis always seem to get away with their dirty little deeds.

IF Calipari broke the NCAA rules, report him with your "proof". For some reason I don't think I'll hold my breath for that to happen. It's easy to throw out statements, but with as many people that dislike Calipari and Memphis, it seems that if there was ANYTHING to get him on, they would've by now. Because it hasn't happened tells me a lot more "truth" than what you have to offer.
  • TigerJaaaa
    Bob,

What a moron! How the hell did a "bad coach" get to 2 Elite 8's, a National Championship game, and another Sweet 16 (and still counting) in consecutive years? If he's paying players, show the proof. You and your ilk throw these allegations all the time. And don't bring up the UMass/Camby stuff because the NCAA cleared Calipari of ANY WRONGDOING in that matter. Don't believe me? Look it up.

I'm willing to concede that he may not be among the "elite" coaches when it comes to "x's and o's", but only a fool could deny the success he's having right now. Keep blaming "feeble CUSA" but to deny his accomplishments in March is asinine. How many other schools are in their 4th consecutive Sweet 16? How many teams from the "Big6/BCS" conferences are performing this well in March? CSUN was an exception to the rule. The demolition of the mighty ACC's Maryland should have been proof enough. It is ironic, however, that you choose to attack Calipari for a poor 1st round game, but say nothing about the struggles of some of the "blue bloods" of college basketball (Kansas' 10pt win, Pitt's 10pt win, or Wake's 15pt loss). Go to the 2nd round and compare the "elite" teams performances...Louisville, Michigan St, Pitt, & Duke were all in very close games, but you can't talk about them. It's hypocritical and beyond idiotic.

Winning a national championship isn't an easy task and the odds are stacked against any single team. You're certainly not going out on a limb to say he'll never win one...but the fact that you set out to do a hatchet job on someone you just don't like shows the lack of depth in your character. Idiots like you are just trying to make a name for them self. You hide behind words on a screen and use innuendo to make your points. You're not the first and you won't be the last...but find some FACTS to back-up your hack-jobs. Otherwise, you have no credibility. Be anti-Calipari if you wish, but have a factual basis for it. I'm sure that's too much to ask. God forbid anyone should be concerned with the TRUTH.

You need to go back to which-ever sewer you came from. Join your anti-Memphis, anti-Calipari buddies like Doug Gottlieb, Seth Davis, Jeff Goodman, and whomever else you want to add. Be as gay as you want with them...giggle about how Memphis is overrated and how great UNC, Duke, Kansas, UConn, and UCLA are...but keep your ignorance out of the public view.

You should watch more basketball and spend less time writing negative stories about people you don't like. You're missing some really good basketball.
  • david
If Cal is such a bad coach, why would you bet a $1000.00 on him?Who is really the dumbass? That's half of your yearly income.Get back on the short bus!
  • jc
The only money Rose was paid to play at Memphis came from the NBA when he went as the number 1 pick. What an assanine statement....fits right in with this article.
  • The Truth
Also, Calipari was quoted after their first round game saying he thinks they'll make it back to the title game because of 'fate'? LOL. A coach that is relying on 'fate,' if there is such a thing. What's next? Is he going to rely on 'God' to get his team through the tournament. Please.
  • keith
because he's made 3 straight elite 8's and he got to a national title
  • The Truth
Actually, I know Tim Flowers, who went to school with Derrick Rose at Simeon in Chicago, and he told me Rose was paid a good sum of money and receieved other perks to attend Memphis, so there is some truth to the statement about Calipari paying recruits.
  • Bob
Thank you, Jeffrey. To answer your last question; Bill Self and his Kansas Jayhawks lost 4 players to the NBA, did not have one 5-star recruit and has a competitive tournament team put together.
  • Jeffrey
    Hey Bob,

I get the 'bad' coach thing on Calapari, but it is not an informed comment. Why? Coaching involves many things, not just the 'failure' to foul in the last seconds of the Kansas game ( do you know if he told his players to foul? and the could or did not). To judge anything, look at it's history, the total body of work, as many love to say.

Start with recruiting, a primary job of a coach. Calipari scores high there, by any standard. Why? Partly because he graduates his players, partly because he tells them and their parents the truth about the NBA, and certainly because his scouts and judgment have been good enough to compete with the best, not just the lowly CUSA.

Move to teaching, a primary responsibilty of the head coach and his staff. Calipari again scores very high. Watch the defense that Memphis plays and wonder in you head why they play that way. Do kids come out of high school playing defense like that? NO. It's entirely the ability of the coach to sell them on playing defense, and then training them on playing really smart defense.

And finally, live game coaching. I'll give a little on this one, but only a little. Calipari is not the very best live game coach, tactically, but you nor I can give informed critique here, and I would put him as more than adequate. For instance, when Antonio Anderson, Memphis' best defender, was having trouble guarding the best player a few games ago, Calipari responded this way ' Antonio, do i need to put someone else on your man' ... Antonio gave up 2 points in the second half, shut down the guy.

I think Calipari is at the top as a motivator, and in game situations, he frequently finds the right thing to say to get his team going. These are human beings, not chess pieces, and what he may miss tactically, he more than excells at personally.

Finally, regarding his obnoxious personality, I agreed for a while with this critique, until I realized how much this man really cares about his players. And, as a former schoolteacher, I also know that reason is not the best way to reach some individuals. Emotion is. That's just the way it is and this coach knows that and uses both.

I hope this satisfies you request for why coach cal should be held out as one of the best coaches in the college ranks. Check out maryland's graduation rate compared to memphis and check out Memphis' graduation before and after coach cal came.

And last, how many coaches, in college, loose 3 players to the NBA, as coach Cal did, and still manage to put a tournament team together. that is all about coaching, it doesn't just happen
  • john
Let's see what the coaches think about Memphis over the last 4 years.

He's a terrible coach, your right, he lost the National Championship Game. You stupid tool, how did he get to the game???? Most terrible coaches I know, don't even make the tourney, much less beat Mich State, Texas, UCLA on their way to the championship game. I promise you, the people voting him "Coach of the Year" know a little more about basketball than you do, thats why you are writing on Bleacher Report. Your right, Hummers and thousands of dollars in gifts, I guess no one at the NCAA is as smart as you. College programs are investigated every day, do you have some proof that no one else has? I think your up to no good. I don't think you paid your taxes last year, I think you cheat on your wife or your "life partner". I think you go to the park on weekends and look at small kids and have weird thoughts. I don't have any proof of any of this, but its what I think, so thats all the proof I need, right?
  • Ken
    Bob,

No one has said anything about Cal being a good coach because everyone is AMAZED that you are such an idiot! Your rant is so ridiculous it doesn't deserve a point-by-point response. How about you give a little substantiation for your claims (since you started this b.s.) -- has Cal EVER been found guilty of offering illegal enticements to recruits (since you are obviously a bit slow, let me help you -- NO). You say he ought to be blowing out CUSA teams -- how about 61 win in a row? Not bad. How is elite eight 3 years in a row and an OT loss in the national championship game. And, of course all those coaches and others that vote for Coach of the Year must be idiots and don't know a thing about basketball..... Recruiting is part of being a great coach but to win like this you have to be a well rounded talent. Cal is one of the best and if you don't get that, well let me be nice, perhaps you just don't get it.
  • Bob
Funny that both of you had nothing to say about Calipari being a good coach. I'm 'completely wrong,' but why? I would really like to hear what makes Calipari a good coach.
