Keep Your Kool-Aid, Lou (Holtz), It's Obviously Been Spiked

on 09 1, 2009

Thanks to our guest blogger, Kimberley Nash for the article!

Let’s just get straight to the point, shall we? Lou Holtz is a blathering idiot and should no longer be allowed to hold a seat as a “commentator”.

Was that clear enough?

His recent pick of Notre Dame as a National Title contender is laughable—especially considering he is the same man who stated the Irish would win ten games last season (they went 7-6 by the way).

Here’s the rub, though, the Irish do appear to have an easy schedule this season. They play their toughest game, against the Trojans, at home; and their road schedule is manageable.

That said, Notre Dame is STILL coached by Charlie Weis—the man who never met a brain he liked more than his own; an arrogant son of a gun, with no reason to brag to this point, yet he comes off like he’s college football’s gift to coaching.

Does Notre Dame have a good team this season? Yes. No doubt.

Jimmy Clausen began to come into his own last season; ending on an offensive high note against Hawaii (throwing for 401 yards and five scores), they have a solid offensive line and will boast one of the better secondaries in the nation with both Kyle McCarthy and Harrison Smith returning at strong and free safety respectively.

Lou Holtz kool aid is spiked

Add in a nice receiving duo in Golden Tate and Michael Floyd and it’s hard not to see an improvement in the Irish’s disappointing 7-6 finish.

However, all that said, Notre Dame will not beat USC. That’s a fact. USC beat them by 35-points last season and, despite the loss of Mark Sanchez, the Trojans have a talent pool that is plenty deep—replacing Sanchez will be difficult but not impossible.

Another possible loss is at Michigan. Rodriguez may be playing with fire as he tries to shake out his quarterback situation but his defense is developing into a quiet force with both the defensive line and the linebacker corps looking like defensive sleeper units this season.

Michigan State always gives Notre Dame fits (the Irish lost 23-7) in East Lansing last season and 31-14 in South Bend the season prior.

Navy won’t be as easy as it looks on paper either. Weis had a tough time corraling the Midshipmen in last year’s win, 27-21.

Pitt and Boston College will both prove to be challenging as well.

Bottom line, the schedule may look like cake but Notre Dame has been a perennial underachiever since Weis took the reigns and I don’t look for that to change in 2009.

Can they win 10? Sure. However, a National Championship isn’t a stretch…it’s just downright ludicrous.

Then again, I’ve come to expect that from Lou—perhaps he and Beano Cook should do a show together; call it “The Two Live Fools”.
