Milwaukee Brewers, a spring training peak

Bob on 02 24, 2009

With spring training coming up, it’s time to start taking a look at the MLB more meticulously.

The Milwaukee Brewers need to bulk up their pitching ASAP.  The pipedream of keeping CC Sabathia in a Brewers uni came to an end when he the Yankees threw an absurd amount of money at him(7 yr/161 mil.).  Ben Sheets is gone to free agency. The Brew Crew recently obtained pitcher Braden Looper from the Cardinals and relief pitcher Trevor Hoffman from San Diego.  I really hope these are not the only moves the team plans on making, if so; it could be a long and excruciating season.

Currently the starters are Yovani Gallardo, Dave Bush, Braden Looper, Jeff Suppan and Manny Parra.  The Brewers top guns are Gallardo and Parra…If you’re not a Milwaukee fan you probably haven’t even heard of them.  They have both shown flashes of greatness.  Gallardo could be the ace if he can stay healthy, he certainly has the talent to.  None of these guys are really proven though, and that is potentially a big problem.

Milwaukee has a potent offensive lineup, and they are going to be forced to carry the bulk of the weight this season in order for the Brewers to get wins if they don’t make a move and pick up another pitcher or two.  There are some free agent pitchers available who could give good contributions (Randy Wolf and Odalis Perez to name a couple).

Who knows?  Maybe these unproven guys will step up and turn some heads this year, but it is speculative and it definitely would not hurt to add another arm to the Brewers bullpen.

He's also coming off a year where he was injured.

You must be a huge Brewer fan.

Chris is guaranteeing that Gallardo will be a 20 game winner? Really? A guy who has had one impressive year pitching for a bad team? You realize the MLB only has a couple 20 game winners a year? They are generally better than Gallardo and on better teams.

I'd put my left nut on the fact that Gallardo doesn't win twenty.

I would make an argument that Gallardo has proven himself as one of the top young pitchers in the MLB. Let's not forget his season 2 years ago when he was first called up. (9-5 with a 3.67 ERA, 101 strikeouts in 110.1 innings) Last year he had about 20 K's or so in 24 innings. It was just that freak injury against the Cubs last year that cut his season short. Gallardo WILL be a 20 game winner and an all star this season.
