Minnesota Vikings determined to be Super Bowl losers
Tyler on 05 11, 2009
Despite being the NFC North division leader last year, the Minnesota Vikings have failed to address the incredible deficiencies that the team possesses. They possess the league’s best rush defense giving up 76.9 ypg combined with only giving up 10 rushing touchdowns all year. They also have the league’s most imposing, talented running back in the league, Adrian Peterson. Along with possessing a very average special teams (72.2% FG), the Vikings quarterback position is completely lacking.
Tarvaris Jackson has proven to be incapable of taking advantage of the windows opened by Adrian Peterson. Despite teams stacking the line to stop the best running back in the league, Jackson has amassed only 20 TD’s in the last three years (BENCHED last year) with a QB rating of 76.5. The Vikings did make an offseason move in picking up former Houston Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels. This 31 year old out of Iowa State has proven to be just bad enough to beat Jackson out for that number 2 QB position. Rosenfels led his team to a 2-3 record in his 5 games started last year while Matt Schaub was out. In the games he played last year he narrowly beat Jackson with a 79.5 QB rating. The Vikings weren’t done yet. Minnesota also went out and used their first pick on the explosive Percy Harvin out of the University of Florida. Despite his character questions, Harvin could use his athleticism to exploit all the man coverage he is sure to see. However, the Vikings lack any form of a “possession receiver” which could prove is exactly what a less than accurate quarterback like Jackson needs.
In steps the greatest Christmas gift any Viking fan could ever receive. Let’s combine the inadequacies of our football team with the opportunity to bask in the face of our neighbors and bitter rivals, the Green Bay Packers. In walks Brett Favre, having protected Packer fans from having to play against him by going to the Jets last year, emerging as a potential acquisition for the Vikings. If Minnesota can lasso Favre, they can improve their passing game while also sticking it to the entire state of Wisconsin.
