Number Four Watch

on 08 12, 2010

You know who I love?  Brett Favre.  And I’m not being sarcastic.  I really am not.  I love him.  I love this story we watch every year.  I love the drama.  I love the tension.

I really do.  I love Brett Favre.  And everyone thinks I am nuts.  They hate the story; they hate how he can never make up his mind.  How he has the staff and team of whoever has become his “chosen group” waiting on hand and foot.  They all hate his flip-flopping.

And to you Brett Favre haters: I ask why?  What’s there to hate?  See, I think you are all jealous.  Truthfully, if that were the reason, I wouldn’t even be sickened by it.  It’s a perfectly legit rationale to hate Brett Favre.  Hell, I’m a little jealous that the only number four we get in Buffalo is Brian Brohm.

So let me tell you why I love Brett Favre.  Because I know that this is an attitude that is disagreed with almost every NFL fan.  No one likes him.  Except me.  I love him.

Brett Favre is possibly the greatest athlete of our generation.  I mean think about it.  This is a man who practically doesn’t age.  He turns 41 in October and he had one of his best statistical seasons of his career last year.  Swallow that.  One of the best quarterbacks of all-time, a no thought first-ballot hall-of-famer, had one of his best seasons ever at 41 years old!  Incredible.  I feel honored to be able to watch a player like this.  I mean, when we have one of the best quarterbacks ever still wanting to play—why should we not encourage him?  Would we not love it if Michael Jordan came back for another year, or Pete Rose, or Troy Aikman?  Sure, it’s a little different scenario, but still?  Wouldn’t it be fantastic?  Why are we discouraging Favre from playing?  Why are we getting sick of his desire to play? We should be begging him to play as long as he can!  It’s a treat watching him.

Look, maybe it’s irritating to watch the man change his mind day in and day out.  But, this is who he is.  Instead of wishing Favre would “just retire already,” we should be welcoming him back year after year.  The guy doesn’t need training camp or preseason games.  He’s one of the best ever.  And if Brett Favre suddenly decides he wants to play for your team, you find room.  You make it happen.  Does Favre deserve special treatment?  Absolutely.  Why is he above the team?  Because he is one of the best ever.  One of the best to ever play quarterback in the NFL.  You find room.

I’m seriously getting sick of all the hate for Favre.  The way I see it, if the one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL wants to play another season, I want him back.  He’s a warrior and I love watching him play.  Take your time, change your mind.  As long as you don your number four on Week One, I’ll be happy.  Kick Saint ass, Brett.
