San Fransisco 49ers are tougher than a Mike Singletary press conference

on 10 9, 2009

The 49er’s future, like their illustrious past, is starting to look very good.  I know, they still don’t have a great quarterback, or an elite receiver, but just hear me out.

They are currently 3-1, and if not for a miracle play by Brett Favre would be 4-0.  They have beaten the Cardinals on the road, and trampled division rivals Seattle and St Louis at home.   The Niners have gone up against Kurt Warner, Matt Hasslebeck, and yes Favre, and are only allowing 13 points per game.  That ranks second in the entire NFL.

You can say that they’re in a bad division, and you’d be correct, but that’s not their fault.  You need only look at how tough they played the Vikings (a trendy Super Bowl Pick) on the road to see that this team has something fundamentally different about it than any 49er team of the past decade.

The difference in a word is SingletaryMike Singletary has his defense playing full tilt, aggressive, knock your teeth out football, and it shows.  On the other side of the ball the 49ers are content with a sit and wait approach.  They will control the ball by running, throw short passes, and commit very few turnovers.

Quarterback Shaun Hill has only one interception on the year, and the team has yet to lose a fumble.  The offense has allowed plenty of sacks, and goes three and out as much as any team in the league, but they do not give away field position with turnovers, and they let their defense dominate.

Case in point last week against the Rams the 49ers compiled only 228 total yards of offense and still won the game 35-0.  The defense scored two touchdowns, and another was added by the special teams.  Of course you can’t expect three non-offensive touchdowns every week, but the focus of this 49er team is clear, which is more than can be said about this organization over the recent past.

The defense is young, dominating, and well coached.  The offense is conservative, plodding, and ball control oriented.  The 49ers don’t have enough this year to make a serious run at a Super Bowl but they have a formula that can win that division.  And the future looks even better.

The 49ers have officially signed with rookie receiver Michael Crabtree.  This will be a huge addition to the future of the 49er offense.  In addition they have the Panther’s first round pick in next year’s draft, as well as retaining their own.

The Panthers are 0-3 and struggling mightily.  This means the 49ers will add Crabtree, a likely top ten pick, and their own first round pick over the course of the next year to a team that is already poised to win their division.

With that influx of talent perhaps the offense can go from average to explosive, and that defense isn’t going anywhere.  Oh yeah, and neither is Singletary.
