The time has come for Donovan McNabb to go elsewhere, this marriage isn't working honey

Adam on 10 20, 2009

It’s time for Donovan McNabb to move to a new city.  He hasn’t worn out his welcome in Philly (although Eagle’s fans aren’t far from cannibalism anytime their team underperforms) it’s just time for new scenery.

Moving a franchise quarterback is never easy, general manager’s shudder at the very thought, but in this case it makes sense.  McNabb is 32 years old, has reached the conference championship five times, and still has not won a Super Bowl.  He’s been great, but he’s done all he can do, and he’s not getting any better at this point in his career.

He’s still young enough to fetch a fair return in a trade, especially in a quarterback starved league, and the Eagles have a talented and much younger replacement in Kevin Kolb.  In addition the Eagles have young talent (LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson) on offense, and should let Kolb grow along with it.

McNabb has had numerous chances to take the Eagles to the pinnacle and simply hasn’t been able to do it.  Eagles’ management needs to recognize that in the NFL if you aren’t going forward, you’re moving backward.  Allow this offense to start a new chapter, and see if Kolb can take you somewhere McNabb hasn’t.

Besides the fact that McNabb has failed to win a championship, you have to consider the division the Eagles are in right now.  The Giants are perhaps one of the best teams in the league, and the Cowboys although up and down are extremely talented.  Even with McNabb, simply winning the division would be incredibly difficult.

By trading McNabb the Eagles could receive perhaps a first round pick to add to their stable of young talent and begin to establish their future.  McNabb could go elsewhere and see if a new dynamic could revive his super bowl hopes.  An amiable split of this long term marriage is what I am proposing, a move good for both parties.

The goal of every player, coach, and front office suit is to win a super bowl.  That window has closed on the Eagles with McNabb.  If management is smart they will recognize that they are simply running in place, and by dealing McNabb they could get enormous salary cap relief, and picks or players in return.

Say yes Philly fans.  Say yes to your future, don’t be blinded by sentimentality, this is a business and its time to make a savvy decision.

Kevin Kolb is the first player in NFL history to throw for over 300 yards in his first two starts.  I’m not saying he’s great already, but he can certainly play and give the Eagles a chance to win.  Then heading into next year Kolb would have full command of the offense, good weapons to utilize, and Eagles management would have a good deal of extra money to make improvements.

McNabb is slated to make nearly $20 million over the next two years.  Think of what the Eagles could do with that extra money, not to mention what they would receive in return for McNabb.

So tell me whats the downside of getting younger, improving for the long term, and saving money?

I agree. I would try to trade him to the Raiders or the Broncos. I would love to get a 1, but a 2 and a 3 would also help rebuild our d.

i bet my penis could win a super bowl with the eagles
  • the downside is throwing an inexperienced qb into the mix who had one good game against the cheifs (and essentially crumbled vs. the saints down the stretch) when the birds already have a really good one starting who knows the system in and out. from the perspective of this article it makes sense, but when all the facts are on the table it would be a horrible move for the franchise at this moment. i like kolb a lot and would maaaayyyybe be open to trading mcnabb in the off season if things don't turn out well this year, but making this drastic of a move in the middle of the season wouldn't do anything but hurt the team.

That is a nice proposal, never thought about that. Kolb has shown flashes of greatness, and I'm not sure McNabb has what it takes to win a 'ship. Too bad the trade deadline ended today.

yeah, thats a great proposal. i doubt it will even be considered this season though... which is sad, because they even have an average back up in Vick.
  • agreed. kolb is legit
