Yankees Hit Rock Bottom; Put First Basemen on Mound
Bob on 04 14, 2009
Just how bad have things gotten for the New York Yankees? While X-ing out the stat tracker pop up for my fantasy baseball league, I swore I saw Nick Swisher, my first basemen who previously hit a homer, was on the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays. Wait a minute, what?!? I did a quick mental recollection of my day to confirm no drugs were involved. Nope, no hallucinogens for me, this has got to be an error on Yahoo’s part. After re-pulling up my stat tracker, Nick Swisher was indeed pitching for the Yankees. I checked ESPN to confirm I wasn’t losing it.
The sad part; Swisher did the best of any Yankee pitcher, throwing a scoreless inning while striking out one. Wow. Just wow. What a joke! I recently wrote articles regarding the Yankees and Cowboys organizations turning into circuses as well as the Rays being the team to beat in the AL, and last night’s game further reinforces those. I bet Jerry Jones’ blood is boiling. How dare you try to outshine his circus! I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Nick Folk (kicker) taking snaps under center for Dallas at some point this season.
Tampa Bay hammered the Yankees, winning 15-5. The Rays are on an offensive assault, having piled up 26 runs in their last 2 games. Highly touted Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang had another imposing outing on the hill, improving to 0-2 on the season while building on his impressive ERA of 28.93. Hey Wang! – I’m not sure how you guys play ball in Taiwan, but in the US, pitchers like to keep their ERA as close to 0.00 as possible. He must feel like he got hit by a bus subsequent to surrendering 8 runs in 1 inning. To rub it in, Chien-Ming Wang had to watch his FIRST BASEMEN match his season total of strikeouts (1) while throwing a scoreless inning. That’s like walking in on your parents doing the dirty and being forced to watch them finish up as punishment. Talk about degrading. To think this scrub finished 2nd to Johan Santana in voting for the Cy Young award in 2006…
It looks like it might be that kind of the year for the men in pinstripes. For a roster filled with such big names and fat contracts, it’s kind of sad when Nick Swisher leads just about every statistical category (Batting avg., HRs, RBIs, OBP, ERA…). We might have to start referring to him as Nick ‘Swiss Army knife’ (taking credit for that if it sticks), what doesn’t this guy do? Does he cut the grass and rake the field too?
